WHY YOU SHOULD MEET JOSHUA
Joshua Sum is an aspiring leader building in the AI and blockchain space. His work, motivation and vision is wonderfully articulated, and he’ll be helping entrepreneurs, developers, college students around the world gain access to new opportunities.
WHERE AND HOW WE MET JOSHUA
Thomas Ocovos and I met Joshua and Karthik Ganesh (Another cofounder of College DAO) at a side event in Consensus 2023. Through College DAO, I was exceptionally lucky in receiving two free tickets to Consensus, as they were issuing tickets as part of their promotional series for students. I first introduced myself to them at a FileCoin event, unknowing of who they were, what they were building, and everything in the sorts. After a brief conversation with them, they openly welcomed me to ask questions about College DAO and even considered getting involved.
In this article series of YOU SHOULD MEET, I am pleased to introduce to you, Joshua Sum, a cofounder of College DAO, a previous startup entrepreneur, and powerful marketer that’s previously contributed to a startup that raised $18 million in seed funding.
WHAT JOSHUA DOES
Joshua builds applications, networks, and tools for other entrepreneurs. He founded his first company GrowthFunnels in 2020 after his time in the Singapore military handling supply chain logistics. He later founded BeatNami with Karthik to empower musicians to distribute music independently. Joshua creates companies that help others in some form or another. As you discover his portfolio of startups, you’ll recognize that each one focuses on enabling people, from helping small businesses increase SEO conversion rates by 2–3x, or setting up blockchain education networks at universities.
Joshua recently completed his Bachelors at the University of Michigan in Computer Science. During his time in college, he was also involved in several entrepreneurship, venture capital and blockchain communities.
WHAT JOSHUA IS WORKING ON
While in college, he co-founded College DAO with 4 other friends, and the DAO grew to be the largest and fastest-growing university blockchain network at over 100 universities worldwide. But in the early days, they hosted blockchain events, research programs, and bridged partnerships between student communities, blockchain companies and universities. He is currently leading infrastructure and growth, expanding the university blockchain ecosystem through research programs as well as their validator program where student teams and universities run blockchain validators.
He has also been developing 0xKnowledge in stealth It is an AI based knowledge based management system, (KMBS) and he is designing and building the system from the LLM and its backend infrastructure to the frontend, go-to-market and branding. This is an ambitious project aiming to enable any business globally to access a powerful workspace that uses knowledge and resources to assist collaboration and drive adoption of AI with its team members.
MORE ABOUT JOSHUA
Joshua is a pragmatic founder and visionary. His initial work in supply chain and logistics in the military grew his responsibility and commitment to structured principles. He took his lessons as a sergeant and moved into e-commerce, where he co-led operations and customer service at a startup that grew from $1M/month in revenue to $4.5M/month. From there he also became interested in marketing and sales, where he helped optimize conversion leads and funneled sales effectively for small businesses. This experience enabled him to be in all stages of a startup, from operations to sales, business development and leadership. This positioned him to join Treehouse as an early employee, and learn more about product management and DeFi when he was building in its early stages.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR JOSHUA
The future’s not set in stone for Joshua, but I’m sure he’ll do fine. Through the countless opportunities he’s opened for himself, he’ll have a good trajectory in the future, and he does have a proven track record to display that. He will likely continue heading out to other blockchain events and conferences, and he has been actively speaking at events by Benzinga, Stand With Crypto, and various international summits.
